Work Out Anytime Anywhere

Work out anytime, anywhere thanks to this entrepreneur’s BIGG idea. Click PLAY to hear George & Mary-Lynn talk with Shay de Silva on The BIGG Success Show Podcast (Duration 7:22)

Shay de Silva is a Certified Personal Trainer and Fitness Nutrition Specialist. A few years ago, when she couldn’t find a workout program that fit her busy lifestyle, she decided to make her own! Shay turned her passion for creating fun and effective workouts into Fast Fitness To Go – a company that gives everyone the freedom to have an amazing workout anytime, anywhere.

George and I are always so inspired by people who take their passion and turn it into a business, and one of the best places to look is problems you have of your own

G – Shea tell us about the problems you solved with fast fitness to go

S – I had been working as a consultant for a few years and I was traveling a lot. I was jet-lagged I was in hotel rooms I was in meetings all day. In the past I relied on my morning work out to keep me calm and focused, but now things are starting to fall apart I was tired cranky, and I was gaining weight and I didn’t know what to do. So I Googled and checked YouTube looking for a workout plan and some things seemed to work for a day or two but nothing really seemed to work with my schedule.

After struggling with that for a couple of years I just couldn’t take anymore so I got certified as a personal trainer and I made a work out for myself that I could use while I was traveling. Then I started sharing my workouts with other people and it started growing from there and that’s really how I got started.

How to Find Time to Work Out Anytime Anywhere

M – It seems like were pulled in so many directions every day these days it’s hard to have a scheduled set time to work out how do you overcome that?

S – You don’t need to. I used to think that I had to be at the gym for an hour every day. And when that didn’t work anymore I stopped doing anything altogether. so I think getting out of that mindset of “all or nothing” is key.

G – Sinstead of focusing on routine you focus on getting some activity in for the day.

S – Exactly. And that’s especially important when you’re growing your own business. You have meetings to schedule, your trying to meet other people’s schedules as we’ll – so it’s especially important for people who don’t have a normal 9-to-5 routine.

Work Out Anytime Anywhere for BIGG Benefits

G – Are there actually benefits to fitness for business in itself?

S – According to studies, people who exercise regularly earn more money. The study I saw said 9% more. That’s a pretty big chunk of change for your average business!

G – We often think: I need to get that proposal out, or I need to call that client so that I can make more money instead of exercising. But what you’re saying is taking time to exercise can actually help us make more money!

S – Yes plus some of your best creative ideas will come while you’re engaging in physical activity – maybe that problem that you haven’t been able to solve comes to you. There’s just something about moving your body that seems to help other parts of the brain as well.

The Workout Anytime Anywhere Mindset

M – It’s hard to get yourself to stop working to go exercise. So how do you get yourself past that mental block?

S – That happens to everyone even me. The other day when I didn’t feel like exercising I just turned on one of my favorite songs and just started dancing so that I started moving and then after five minutes I was able to do something else, and so on. And one of my favorite tips for people who haven’t worked out in a while is to print out a calendar and keep track. Give yourself a star every time you do some form of physical activity and use that as a motivator.

3 Questions for a Brighter Future

questions You and you alone create your future. You are the only person, place or thing with that power. With that being the case, it's up to you to create the future of your dreams.

One way to do that is to look back so you can look forward. Reflecting upon the past and pulling lessons away so your future is bigger and brighter. With the New Year upon us, now is a great time to review last year so next year lives up to its promise for you.

There's a simple three-stage framework for performing this exercise. It involves asking yourself three questions:

___

___

What?

Start with the actual events of this year. What happened? Describe major events in your life. As you record your answers, test your perceptions to make sure they reflect the reality of the situation. If it helps, pretend that you are a reporter objectively recording the facts of the event.

So what?

At this stage, you move from reporting to understanding, from logic to emotion. That's why it was so important to get the facts right in the first step. What did this experience mean to you? How did it make you feel? Why did you feel that way? What have you learned?

Now what?

The previous two questions lead to this one. How will you apply the lessons you learned? What specific actions will you take as a result of the events you've outlined?

These three simple questions serve as a great outline to review major events in your life and develop forward-thinking plans to be a bigg success.

Let’s look at a couple of examples, using events from 2008.

Example: Volatile stocks

What?
The stock market can be very volatile.

So what?
I can lose money if I don’t understand the risk and how to manage it.

Now what?
I will learn more about investing and asset allocation. I won’t invest money in stocks that I will need in the next ten years. I will pay closer attention to my quarterly reports to make sure I maintain the proper asset allocation given my age and goals.

Example: Layoffs

What?
Times are tough at work; layoffs are possible.

So what?
It makes me nervous. I think I could lose my job.

Now what?
I will look for ways to help my company save money. I will make sure my boss is aware of the projects I complete successfully. I will look for opportunities to add additional skills so I’m more competitive.

Solid goals

In our examples, the “Now what’s” are a little bit fuzzy. You really want to refine them to turn them into solid goals. For instance, looking at the second example, instead of saying “I will look for ways to help my company save money,” turn that into “I will find one way to save my company $X (you pick a relevant amount) in the next 30 days.”

Little Adults, Bigg Kids: What We’re All Missing Out On

playground We recently read a great post by Dr. Robyn Silvermen about treating kids like little adults. She offers a lot of great links to research and other articles about this increasing trend.

___

The calendars of kids today are as busy as ours. Between school and all their extracurricular activities, they’re too busy to really play.

___

georgeI saw an interview with a little girl awhile back. She was brilliant, doing well in school and excelling at everything she did. Her one wish was that she could just have some time to play.

___

Isn’t that sad?

Play pays

Don’t get us wrong – extracurricular activities are great, but it’s good to also have time to engage in activities that don’t have a goal with performance stress attached.

It’s good for kids to just play. It’s good for them physically, socially, and mentally. Play helps them develop their imagination and creativity as well as socially – all important skills in the years ahead.

Turning back the clock

Dr. Robyn cites a growing trend of kids having fitness club memberships. How many of us just love going to the gym? Do you remember playing … just good old fashioned play?  It was fun. Something you couldn’t wait to do. You got some great exercise, but you didn’t watch the clock like you do when you’re working out at the club.

Speaking of clocks, the sad part is that we seem to be turning back the clock. Dr. Robyn’s article includes a quote that says kids are about two years behind in their development compared to sixty years ago. It seems we’re not evolving; we’re going backwards.

We need to do a 180

So let’s let the kids be kids. In fact, let’s take it a step further. Let’s do a 180 degree turn – instead of trying to turn kids into little adults, let’s become bigg kids.

Not in an immature way … just for fun and all the benefits that come with it.

We need to be more child-like. Do you remember being fascinated by bugs? Of course, we’re not talking about bugs inside the house. But isn’t it fascinating to just watch a praying mantis? How relaxing is it to see butterflies fluttering around?

___

marylynnThat’s one of the reasons I love going for walks. I just love seeing all the cool plants. There’s a lake close to our house so I can watch the fish. It sure beats going to the fitness center and watching TV!

___

We get so busy working that we don’t have a second to spare. Sometimes we even block people out so we can get all of our work done. That’s when play time is especially important. Play time is social time. You can relax and talk with people.

And you learn … things that you might not learn any other way. Because other people have different interests. By playing – socializing – you expand our interests. That helps you look at old problems in new ways. You find solutions that you may not find if you don’t get out of your routine.

Play expands our imaginations. Our imagination leads us to be more creative, more innovative. Which is how we find those bigg ideas that lead to bigg success!
