Entrepreneuring Your Work Week to Be a Success

work and play | BIGG SuccessOur ancestors worked six days a week. It was tough work – on the farm, in factories and mines.

As the Industrial Revolution kicked in, the growing prosperity created a desire for more leisure. Henry Ford was a leader in this endeavor.

He wanted his workers to have time to shop. So the five day work week became the norm.

But how many people actually follow this regimen today?

Do you?

We sure don’t.

Almost none of the people in our industry do.

Most professionals we know don’t either.

Finding your ideal work week

Now we love our work. And we go full tilt. But we have learned to entrepreneur our work week.

It’s kind of like engineering it. But engineering is a science.

Entrepreneuring is a science and an art. So we think of it as entrepreneuring our work week.

Work and play are two of the five elements of BIGG success. You need to find what works best for you in the work/play dynamic.

The only way to do that is by experimenting.

If you’re an employee, of course, your boss will have a say. But even if you’re self-employed, you may need to work your schedule around your customers.

But customers can be led. Chick-fil-A has been very successful and they don’t open on Sundays, even though their competitors do.

What we do

We rotate our schedule. Most weeks, we will only work a partial day on the weekends.

So it adds up to about six days of production in most cases.

___

George KruegerWe often approach this time off from two different directions. Mary-Lynn tends to start later than me. I tend to stop earlier than her.

___

___

Mary-Lynn FosterI’m more of a night person and George is more of a morning person. Our point is – your schedule doesn’t always have to align with your partner’s.

___

Of course, there are weeks when we’ll schedule a whole day off. We both love our work so we can go and go and go. But I’ve found I reach a point where my get up and go gets up and goes!

The key to making it work

The key for us is getting it on the schedule. If we don’t schedule it, we keep working.

In fact, we did this post to remind ourselves of this very fact. We hope you find it helpful, too.

As we said earlier, our tendency has been to push and push and push. The problem with that is that you eventually run out of fuel.

You need to fill your tank before that happens. And the only way to do that is to get some time away at regular intervals.

BIGG success is life on your own terms. Our terms are to have less routine. You may do better with more routine. If it works for you, it works.

The only way you’ll know is to test out different work / play schedules. Finding one that fits you perfectly will help you reach BIGG success!

What works best for you?

3 Reasons We Have More Entrepreneurs and Why They are Not Hiring

entrepreneurThe good news is the rate of startups hit a 15-year high in 2010.

The bad news is they’re not hiring.

This data comes from this year’s Kauffmann Index of Entrepreneurial Activity. They call this phenomenon “jobless entrepreneurship.”
We don’t think this is a huge surprise. A lot of people are starting businesses because they can’t find work.

They don’t want the responsibility that comes with hiring others. When you hire people, you feel responsible for putting bread on their table as well as your own.

Carl Shramm, the CEO of the Kauffmann Foundation says in the press release about the report, “This trend, if it continues, could have both short- and long-term impacts on economic growth and job creation.”

The bad news is… it WILL continue. The good news is… it WILL continue.

At least that’s what we think. We believe this to be the case for three reasons:

Kondratiev Winter
We’re in the Winter phase of the long cycle called the Kondratiev wave. Winter is the season for entrepreneuring. The transformation to the next generation economy begins during the Winter. The seeds are sown for the creation of wealth in new ways.

A Revolutionary shift
We’re reverse entrepreneuring the Industrial Revolution.  A great deal of wealth was created during the Industrial Revolution and the subsequent Information Revolution.

It culminated with the financially-driven boom-turned-to-bust of the real estate market. Now we’re seeing the dawn of the Social Revolution.

The Industrial Revolution took us from home to factory, from entrepreneur to employee. The Social Revolution is bringing many people back home for employment and turning many employees back into entrepreneurs.

Free agency fits people’s lives
Free agency is a natural progression. We talked about the rise of free agents a few years ago and we certainly weren’t the first to see it.

BIGG success is life on your own terms. Generally speaking, you have more control of your life as an entrepreneur than as an employee. You can blend your personal life with your professional life more easily. You can feel a greater sense of fulfillment. It’s a better fit for your life.

The crash of the financial markets and the weak job markets has deepened this desire to feel in control. The social web makes it easier and more affordable to start your own business.

So welcome back … welcome back to the world of cottage industries. Welcome back to the world of home-based businesses. Hello solopreneurs!

Do you have a group that needs help understanding entrepreneurs? Or a group of entrepreneurs who are trying to understand the new economy? Maybe we can help. We give presentations on these subjects all the time. Send us an e-mail at bigginfo@biggsuccess.com or leave a voice message at 888.455.2444.
